Health Insurance. Are You Covered?

Did you know that many health insurance policies cover acupuncture treatment?

✔ Check your health insurance policy to see if you are covered. Most policies will cover conditions where the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend acupuncture as a viable treatment.

😊 NICE has just published a draft guideline for chronic pain. The guideline has received extensive media coverage, with the headline that painkillers should no longer be prescribed for long-term pain. I am excited to see that acupuncture is finally recognised for treating pain and it is one of only four treatments now recommended.

This new guideline is for chronic primary pain, characterised by emotional distress and functional disability. Common conditions that would qualify are fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, chronic neck pain and chronic pelvic pain, though there are many more possibilities.

If you suffer from pain, check your insurance policy to see if you are covered for acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture has an excellent safety profile, with very few adverse events when performed by a trained practitioner. Meanwhile, basic science studies of acupuncture involving animals and humans have shown other potential benefits, from lowering blood pressure to long-lasting improvements in brain function. More broadly, acupuncture research has resulted in a number of insights and advances in biomedicine, with applications beyond the field of acupuncture itself."
